02-12-10:   Oppo has released an SE version of the 83 using ESS Sabre DACs for both multichannel and 2 channel.  This new upgraded model will only be for those who are using analog outs as the digital outs/HDMI outs remain the same as the standard 83.    Basically, it is better DACs and somewhat better power supplies than the standard 83.  The mods to the SE are mostly the same as on the regular 83 except no multichannel DAC disconnect.

Please read our 83 Standard/83SE/Nuforce comparison page:

Currently we are running around 2 weeks lead time for advanced mods and we can do the basic mod right away .  I can schedule you for advanced mods right away and you can send an Oppo here anytime for the basic mod (please let me know it is arriving).

Overseas orders:    I am getting a ton of inquiries from overseas.  I can ship anywhere in the world.  The Oppo has a universal power supply that runs on 110-240V and 50 or 60 cycles.  However, because the machine is being sent far away, I burn in the unit after mods for 3 days to make sure it is going to stay working.  For this extra labor I need to charge $25.  The minimum mod you can get for overseas sales is the basic mod ($225).   This makes the total $250 minimum for any overseas orders.   All advanced mods are in addition.   If you want the machine multiregion capable then you have two options:  you can download the free software from codefreedvd.com and install it or have either the JVB or CRT Projectors hardware mod installed by me or install it yourself (takes 5 minutes and no soldering according to the JVB website).  Cost of the JVB board is currently $89 plus shipping in the US.  You could buy it at any time and have it shipped to your door and install it very quickly.  The apparent advantage of the hardware mod is that you only need to install it once, where as with each new software update to the Oppo you have to reapply a new hacked software with the code free info installed.  I am not an Oppo dealer but I can buy the Oppo for you and also buy the JVB or CRT thing for you and install it and then install all my mods and ship the unit anywhere in the world after that.  I charge $25 to install the JVB board.

Warrantee information:   Once the unit is modded you lose the factory warrantee.  We do not make enough money on our mods to give a free warrantee.  Those modders that do have warrantees charge way more for their mods and make 2-4 times as much money as me ($100-$200 per hour).  What I offer is the following:

1. I will fix any EVS modded machine for the cost of parts and return shipping only (we do the work for free).  This is for five years.  The most expensive part is the main decoding board with the Blue Ray and VRS chips on it ($200).
2. If you want a warrantee I can give you a one year warrantee for $50.

Please read our mod comparison page to see how our mods compare to others.   click here

Any mod can be done at any time.  This way, you could get the basic mod now and add more advanced mods later when you have more money.   The mods done by us in no way affect any software upgrades in the future and all functions remain intact.

The two channel analog outs and the multichannel analog outs are completely separate on the BDP-83.  There is a dedicated two channel DAC for the stereo outs and a dedicated 8 channel DAC for the multichannel outs.  The basic mod covers all 10 channels.  However, you can get advanced mods on the stereo out, the multichannel outs or both.

Mods are currently:

Basic level mod :   $225   Update: 6-25-2010: We are doing even more but the labor is now at least 3.5 hours so we have to raise the price to $225. This mod makes all outputs much sound better including digital coax and HDMI.  This mod is mandatory for any more advanced mods we do .....we can do it without any of the analog outputs being modded for $170 but highly recommend you get all the analog output stages modded as you never know when you need a good analog source.    (now with Transport Magic .....see below)

Includes a new Furutec IEC AC connector for better grip and sound, removal of distortion producing parts on the AC input, new soft recovery diodes in the power supply, damping and proprietary treatment of the transport mechanism, modification of all 10 channels of analog output stages, and other proprietary mods. We remove several components and solder joints from all 10 analog channels and change all audio op amps to the latest National Semi conductor jobbies.  We solder a 50 ohm resistor directly from the output opamp to the output jacks.   This mod alone gives way better sound for both stereo out and multi-channel out.     With this mod, the size of the instruments gets larger and it sounds about 2db louder at the same volume (no, we did not raise the gain, it is just that the natural dynamics and soundstage are no longer squashed!).  The bass is way more controlled, deep and dynamic.  Instruments in complex music now stand out from each other with amazing detail.  The soundstage is bigger and much more air and space is revealed.  It sounds more natural and real.   Amazing mod.  Amazing deal!

Update 10-06-09 :  "Transport Magic" has arrived.  We have done another mod to the transport that transforms the sound.  You have to hear this.  Done nowhere else but here.

Advanced mods:   You can do any or all of the below mods in addition:

For Two channel analog out:

EVS two channel output stage plus modded discrete regulators:   $350

Breakthrough (10-17-2010) .....We are now using a zero feedback buffer that sounds better than our old amplifier (more pure and real sounding).   Also we are now completely de-nuding all the important Wima caps including the output caps and power supply bypasses.  This mod now puts the modded Wimas in the company of multi-hundred dollar each caps.  De-nuding the Wima caps and testing them for outside foil takes around 14 minutes each.  Very tedious and super meticulous work.  No one else would ever do this.  This zero feedback buffer output stage will give only one volt per phase....so might not be compatible in a passive preamp based system.  We are investigating a new zero feedback stage that has gain and if it works out it could then give 2 or more volts per phase.

We hardwire this buffer on a perf board and the shunt regulators are mounted right next to the output for the best sound.  We use our de-nuded Wima film caps as power supply bypass caps.  The output stage has one pole of filtering and is coupled directly to the output jack through two parallel de-nuded Wima caps.  We supply a muting circuit with this output stage so no turn on and turn off surges happen during power outages.   This is very pure sounding!
Update 6-12-10 : We have added star grounding on the output stage for even more transparent sound.

Dual Mono version of the above EVS output stage:

We use separate shunt discrete regulators on each channel for even better sound.     $500

Baby Version Buffer stage:   The very same buffer and de-nuded Wimas but run off the stock power supply.   $200

Better regulator and power supply parts for the two channel DAC.  $125     Our new 3.3V shunt regulator and film power supply caps for the two channel DAC make the two channel sound even better. This mod brings greater purity and openness to the sound.  More 3D and real....more wood....more resonance, more clarity.

Install EVS Clock 2
  $350
Update 2-08-10 :  Added a separate power transformer, raw supply and ground isolation to the already great clock 1 and the clock 2 is born.  Mucho better.  Simply sweeter, more analog and more real sounding.  Delicious!  Update 6-12-10:   Added a Jensen 22,000 uf 4 pole cap to the clock supply, one.   This option is $100 installed.

OFC output jacks:     $40      These jacks give a more musical and detailed sound.  Highly recommended at any level of mod.

Eichmann Phono Pods:   $70.   These jacks are slightly better than the OFC jacks above.  The best we have heard.

Jensen 4 pole cap for main filter cap in the switching power supply :   $100  The Jensen cap here gives a more holographic, clear and clean sound at any level of mod.

Dual Mono Balanced/single ended outputs for two channel only mod:   $625.   This mod would have no analog multichannel on the player.   We remove the multichannel output jacks and in their place we mount the XLR output jacks.  The single ended outputs would still be functional and OFC or Eichmann jacks could optionally be installed.  Output voltage would be 1 volts per phase.  The unit would also then be dual mono in that each channel has its own separate plus and minus regulator, so single ended outs would be the same as the dual mono single ended mod above.  The circuitry to the balanced output jacks is completely balanced....there is no conversion to single ended......one non inverting buffer from each DAC output pin to the output jack.

Notice the Gold plated Neutrik XLR connectors and the OFC RCA jacks.  This customer is also using our balanced Ultimate Attenuators directly into an Ayre amp.....some seriously great sound

Built-in pair of EVS Ground Enhancers.  Soldered directly to the output jacks:  $15

All out two channel analog out mod:    Cost is:  $225 for basic mod, $500 for dual mono super output stage, $125 for better reg and power supply caps for DAC,  $70 for the best 2 channel output connectors, $100 for the Jensen cap for the switching supply, and $300 for the Max linear supply:    Includes free built-in EVS Ground Enhancers......$1320 with dual mono single ended, or  $1445 total for dual mono balanced and single ended outputs.  Add $400 for EVS Clock 2 with Jensen cap.

For Multichannel analog out:

Better op amps for the surround channels:   Free, now included in basic mod.

Better Regulator and parts for the multichannnel DAC.  $125 .  This is the first and most important multichannel mod.  Our super shunt regulator plus audio electrolytic's and modified film caps.

Even mo' better Class A zero feedback circuits for the front left, front right and center surround sound channels.  We use our own circuit board, high bias class A zero feedback buffers, resistors and filter caps.  $250    This mod takes the front three channels to another level.  These buffers have no gain so the output of the front three channels is one volt or 6db less than the other channels.  Naturally, you can compensate for the difference in the Oppo set up menu or in your pre-pro/receiver.

Better regulators for the zero feedback front three channel circuit.  $125    Add two shunt regulators for the zero feedback buffers.

Max linear supply:   please see info above in two channel section.  This is for those who are getting the zero feedback stages and linear regs for the DAC.

Install EVS Clock 2  $350 or $450 with additional 4 pole Jensen cap

Jensen 4 pole cap as main filter cap:  $100

All out multichannel analog out mod would cost $225 for basic mod, $250 for zero feedback buffers in three surround channels, $250 for better regs and power supply parts, $100 for the Jensen cap for the switching supply, and $300 for the max linear supply  = $1125.  Add $400 for EVS clock 2.

For Multichannel digital or HDMI out only:

Basic mod for digital/HDMI only  $170

Install EVS Clock 2
$350   or $450 with additional Jensen 4 pole cap

Jensen 4 pole cap for the switching supply   $100

All out Multichannel digital/HDMI out mod:  Basic digital mod $170, EVS clock $350, Jensen cap for the switching supply $100 and additional Jensen cap  $100 for the clock = $720

Everything above subject to change.  more to come !!!!!!

Oppo BDP-83SE Mod Info

Max Linear power supply for the analog DAC supply and analog output stage:    (Must first have our output stage and DAC regulator for this mod).   We install a 25 watt split bobbin transformer in front of the switching supply board....or, if you have the EVS clock, we use the transformer used for the clock. We run the secondary power of this transformer over to the other side of the Oppo and use two sets of soft recovery diodes and two 22,000 uf Jensen 4 pole caps bypassed with modified film caps to directly power the analog DAC supply and the analog output stage.   Cost is $250 if you have the EVS clock or $300 without the clock. Much more musical, dynamic and grainless with this mod....very serious upgrade!
