Modifications to Puritan line filters
My friend wanted to try some better sockets and wire on his Puritan PSM156 line filter that he uses in conjuncton with his Giandel Inverter (see inverter page for pictures). So we got 3 Furutech single NCF outlets and a Furutech 20 amp NCF inlet (he only wanted to try 3 of the outlets in case he did not like the results) and he burned in the outlets using his Audiodharma Cable Cooker. He brought the filter and sockets to me and I installed them using cryoed 14 guage foamed Teflon insulated OFC wire (in a crude way)....in that the jacks are just hanging out of the back of the chassis......safe, but not sexy at all. He sent me this email the next day:
"Short version after Furutech install: another big improvement due to the lowering of noise
greater purity of tone timbre more beautiful but not colored wider soundstage great micro dynamics, harmonic shadings, instrumental shiftings better focus greater dimensionality" The above comments were with him using his mono block amps and his preamp plugged into the new Furutech sockets.....and the rest of his gear still being fed by the other 3 stock sockets.......all outputs being benefited by the use of the Furutech inlet. He is now going to order 3 more single Furutech outlets and I will install those later.....once he burns them in. After he made his comments I posted them online to let everyone know what is possible and while I was writing the post I realized that I could do this as a service for other people. The Puritan line filters are amazing stock......but us audiophiles always want more purity, lower noise, more detail and greater emotional connection to the music. There is a company in the UK that is performing a similar mod to mine but with the UK units. They sell the Puritan units stock...or with the mod. They use the UK Furutech jacks but use the stock (not as good) wire from Puritan.....here is a link to their site: I will be offering the mods in two ways (maybe more down the road)... The first version is similar to what I just did for my friend. It would have all the jacks dangling on short wires outside the back of the unit. The unit would look stock from the front. The wires and jacks would be insulated more than the pics I show below.....so will be safe for human use. This mod can be done fairly quickly as I do not have to do any chassis mods or make a new back panel. Assuming I can split the Furutech dual outlets so each socket is isolated from one another......then 3 dual Furutech outlets can be used along with the 20 amp IEC inlet. The Furutech outlets and inlet for either mod would be burned in for at least 100 hours before installing. The second version would have a wooden back panel that would be hand made by me and have all the jacks mounted like a normal product. This would take me much more time and therefor cost more money. But it would look cool. The dual outlets on the back would be covered with wall plates (from simple nice aluminum to optional expensive NCF Furutech carbon fiber)....NICE. The Furutech NCF dual outlets retail for $281 each....and the inlet retails for $130. These are the very best Furutech sockets. One could use lesser Furutech's or other brands.....but the results are unkown......we know what the burned in Furutech's do.....simply incredible. Pricing is tentative .....depends on how long it takes.....but here is a crude estimate:
Furutech AC outlets.....$281 x 3 = $843.......Furutech AC inlet $130.....total = $973....x 15% discount = $827. The second version would be at least $300 more...and much more if you op for the Furutech carbon fiber NCF socket covers ($160 list price each...ouch).
The price for a Puritan 136 would be the same......and it would be possible to mod the 12 outlet big boy Puritan 1512; Please call for more info.....831-600-7102
My friends very crude version....using 3 single outlets. The cover is off the Puritan and he has some PPT mats in there.....He has now removed the PPT mats and has the cover on. Version one would have 3 dual outlets and the wires going into the Puritian would be covered with tech flex and with more heatshrink and electrical tape added so that it would be totally safe.
