Kef LS 50 Meta super duper mod There is a new version of the LS50....the LS 50 Meta. Everyone is raving about these compact speakers. These speakers have basically the same UniQ driver that the Reference and Blade have. However, the binding posts, crossover parts, wiring is not to the level of the Reference series which is not to the level of the Blade series. So what if you took the LS50 Meta and removed the entire crossover from the box and did this: 1. Use super wire and hardwire this wire directly to the voice coil wires on the UniQ driver. No speaker in the world has ever done this....that I know of. 2. Mount Ground Enhancers directly on the negative voice coil wire for improved transparency. 3. Mount a Bybee Quantum Clarifier directly on the back of the Meta material......see here for review: 4. Run the wires out the back to an external xover that uses better parts than even the Blade speaker. 5. The connections to the xover and from the xover to the drivers would be using clamps using quarter inch nylon hardware (the same sound as hard soldering but you can disconnect it). Doing all the above will totally transform the speaker.....way more transparent, detailed, dynamic and alive and far better than the Blade 2 Meta speaker from 450 hz up. Add a couple of subs and you are in state of the art land. I can also add a cap to the input of the woofer to roll it off say at 150-1200hz so that you can run the subs up to that level and the speaker will play much louder and with more authority What is interesting is that Kef does some of what I propose on their top of the line Kef Blade speakers. They use really good wire, they hardwire the xover, they use WBT binding posts, and really good xover parts. But the LS50 Meta is not a reference product, so they are skimping. What I do is way way beyond the parts and execution of the Blade speakers. Even the coils used on the blade for the mids and highs are not the better sounding foil coils and no one in the world has ever hardwired to the voice coil wires. The guestimate for such a custom xover and mods to the speaker would be something like $2000......call if you are seriously interested.......this will blow your mind! |
